Creating Mentor Networks
Below are two news articles; one authored by Smith-Barrow with tips on how to identify a mentor and how to set up clear lines of communication and expectations and a more sobering one by Busteed. Together they provide data that show undergraduates who are mentored by faculty have higher GPAs, better confidence, skills set training, and more success professionally. Consider how you will identify two faculty, alumni, and/or staff mentors, what criteria are important to you, and if you are struggling to find someone onsite, consider the online venues below and/or off site. Most professional societies have a mentor network accessible to students, for instance the American Psychological Society, The American Society for Cell Biology, etc.

If you are planning on pursuing a PhD in math, social sciences, and/or humanities and have interest in bridging the gap in education disparities there are summer and academic year programs to support your application process. The Institute for the Recruitment of Teachers is organization that seeks to diversify the pool of educators in high schools and colleges and provides mentoring and reduction of fees for graduate school applications and summer workshops. They offer an on-site four-week Summer Program, a summer graduate school fair, and a Fall Associates Program with virtual weekly mentoring. Deadline for applications for rising seniors or juniors is April 1.
