The Bronx is usually portrayed in negative and underdevelopment terms but what we fail to recognize is the great capacity there. The time period is 1976-1982. NYC is broke, public services are being cut, recession on the rise, and some say the Bronx is burning. At the same time, we have community organizations fighting for housing justice and hip hop culture emerging among other social responses, which receive less attention during this tumultuous period. We also see the rise of HIV/AIDS. The story of the South Bronx is complex and really presents lessons to learn about vulnerability and resilience of our neighborhoods in NYC.
