Judson Church, 55 Washington Square, NYC
Living with HIV can be a traumatic experience. Caring for someone living with HIV can be a traumatic experience. In this workshop, writers will have an opportunity to write alongside trauma about their experiences of HIV with the help of Jennifer and Michael. Both will share their work, and their talent to help people work their own thoughts and feelings through writing. This event is funded in part by Poets & Writers with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.
The What Would an HIV Doula Do? collective will host a participatory workshop about how to honor, support and activate transitions in personal health and the political climate through the lens of the ongoing AIDS crisis. The collective will partner with members of the 1990s group WAVE (Women’s AIDS Video Enterprise): caregivers who used video, conscious raising, and collective action to make a positive difference early in the epidemic. Using video, writing prompts and group discussion, the two groups will explore current realities for people living with HIV, those deeply impacted, and folks who wish to be more involved. The workshop is free, and open to the public. People living with HIV, and those providing related care are encouraged to attend.
