As we watch in horror the daily meltdowns at the White House COVID-19 press briefings and lament the lack of leadership in other parts of the world, eyes around the globe have turned to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo as an exemplar of competent leadership. His PowerPoint presentations — part pandemic primer, part pep talk, part placation — have won much praise and admiration, inspiring tributes, memes, and parodies. In this talk we’ll examine how Cuomo deploys the slidedeck as a rhetorical device and political tool, projecting a reassuring image of managerial order while also distracting from his missteps.Presented by Shannon Mattern, Professor of Anthropology.
