Summer Programs

The programs below are academic-based programs involving some academic course work in conjunction with experiential learning. For a list of strictly research or experiential experiences with mentoring opportunities see the Internships page. Please note that the Eugene Lang Opportunity Awards Program could subsidize these academic based programs below.  


Bioethics

International Global Bioethics Summer School While not a paid  internship nor research experience, this five-week (June 15-July 18) program provides coursework, mentoring, and a venue for student presentations. It is expensive, but students could see if they can receive college credit, and there is a partial scholarship opportunity to subsidize costs. Many of the topics are in line with the IS Program and New School Curriculum. Early Registration due April 15; $1650 for undergrads. Regular Registration due May 25, $1750 for undergrads. Partial scholarship application due May 15.

Environment

Alaska Conservation Foundation Internships These sponsored internships are with major organizations dedicated to protecting the natural resources and cultural heritage of America’s last great wilderness. This is a highly competitive program, that places students with various organization and provides stipends. Organizations include Alaska Conservation Foundation (ACF), the National Wildlife Federation, and the Alaska Conservation Alliance, Alaska Community Action on Toxics, among others. $5040 stipend for 12-week summer internship in Alaska, $1400 for roundtrip airfare from New York City to Anchorage. Additionally, this program is open to graduating seniors. Applications open in January. February deadline.

The Tishman Environmental Scholars Summer Merit Scholars Program Students majoring in Environmental Studies or Interdisciplinary Science are selected annually to participate in this New School customized program. Scholars engage in conservation research, develop environmental education programs, work on grassroots campaigns to advance pro-environment policies, and support programs to foster sustainable development in communities throughout the state. Tishman Merit Scholars receive: a paid 12-week summer internship in Alaska, tuition scholarship for four credits of independent study, roundtrip airfare from New York City to Anchorage. This program is co-sponsored by The New School and the Northern Alaska Conservation Foundation and the Renewable Energy Alaska Project, which are two primary hosts for interns. At the moment the program is run by Alan McGowan in the Environmental Studies program at TNS. So please contact him in the fall for internships the following summer.  Alumni from the Interdisciplinary Science Program who have completed this program include Duncan Figurski, Eva Brill, Alan Robles, Ana Remis, Erik Johansson. December 21 deadline.


STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Math)

Art + Bio Collaborative From Deserts to Jungles!  Field Studies of Art+Nature are one-of-a-kind, immersive educational programs that integrate Biology, Art, and Nature in diverse and unique environments.  Through hands-on observation, artistic interpretation, collaboration and various biological and Natural History methods, we learn to utilize the natural habitat as a STUDIO+LAB to explore, learn, respect, and make informed art about plants, animals, and Nature. Courses are about one month long, $1500- $3000 to register (travel not include) and involve camping.  Subsidies for under represented persons.

Africa Media Wildlife Media Short Courses (one month to two weeks) An environmental and wildlife media and training company based in South Africa. They are specialist partners to national and international media producers, publishers and broadcasters. Their core focus is the creation of original photographic, video and written media from the African continent. Courses in underwater photo, conservation photo, etc.  Run about $2000-$3000, it’s a good idea to apply for ELOA grant (Eugene Lang Opportunity Awards)
